Dana Stockton is a member of the Endicott Fire Department for several years he has served this community as one of our local heroes. Dana was recently diagnosed with a rare form of cancer and now he needs us to help him.

                              The Chore Wars

The role men play inside the home has certainly started to evolve compared to 30 years ago, and most men seem to be stepping up to help with household chores. But is it enough and are they given credit for their efforts by their female counterparts? Apparently not. The makers of Scrubbing Bubbles have released the second annual Dirty Work Index survey and found when it comes to cleaning, women still play the dominant role and may not be ready to share the spotlight even though they want more help. The down and dirty facts:

•When it comes to cleaning, women think they do it all. In fact, 58% of women say it’s their “job” to clean, and 25% of all women feel as if they’re the cleaning “leader” in their homes.

•More than half of women said they want more help from their partner or spouse, but 38% don’t trust them to meet their standards of cleanliness.

•45% of men say it’s their job to clean and contribute to the household. More surprisingly, nearly 75% of men claim to clean to make their spouse or partner happy – demonstrating they do care about helping out and are picking up the slack.

                    Sinking Ship: Jump Or Wait?

Age matters when it comes to making a decision to try and swim to safety or wait for help if your found yourself on a sinking cruise ship. A Poll Position survey asked, would you choose to stay on the sinking ship hoping help would come, or would you jump into frigid waters to try and swim to safety. The choice of 42% of respondents was to jump in the water to try and swim to safety, 29% said they would stay on the ship hoping help would come, 29% had no opinion. Young people were more likely to swim for it while older Americans said they would wait for help. In the 18-29 year old age group, 63% said they would jump into the water and try to swim to safety, 15% would wait for help, 22% had no opinion. Among Americans 65 and over, 45% would stay on the sinking ship hoping for help, 24% said they would jump in the water to try and swim to safety, 31% did not offer an opinion. Among men, 43% said they leap into the water and swim for it, 29% would stay on the ship and hope for help, 28% offered no opinion. Women offered close views with 41% saying they would jump into the frigid water to try and swim to safety, 30% said they would stay on the sinking ship hoping for help, 30% did not have an opinion.

                                   Good Gossip

Gossip may not be as evil as society makes it out to be, according to a new study. Researchers from the University of California, Berkeley, found that gossiping can actually lower stress, stop exploitation of others and police others’ bad behavior. The study included four experiments, all of which included a game with a cheater who hoarded points. Researchers found that when people in the study saw someone acting badly, their heart rates increased. But it helped their heart rates when they were able to share what they witnessed with someone else, particularly to warn them of the potential exploitation. “Spreading information about the person whom they had seen behave badly tended to make people feel better, quieting the frustration that drove their gossip,” researchers said. In addition, researchers found that people in the study were even willing to sacrifice money in order to let other people know of cheaters who were players in economic trust games – in this case, gossiping was a means of preventing other people from being taken advantage of, the researchers said.
